What began as a project helmed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students in Stanford University's Ph.D. program, is now one of the most influential companies on the World Wide Web: Google. At first, the students' goal was to make an efficient search engine that gave users relevant links in response to search requests. While that's still Google's core purpose today, the company now provides services ranging from e-mail and document storage to productivity software and mobile phone operating systems. In less than a decade, Google evolved from a two-man enterprise to a multibillion-dollar corporation.

Today, Google's popularity continues to grow. In 2007, the company surpassed Microsoft as the most visited site on the Web [source: Kopytoff]. The company's influence on the Web is undeniable. Practically every webmaster wants his or her site listed high on Google's search engine results pages (SERPs), because it almost always translates into more traffic on the corresponding Web site. Google has also acquired other Internet companies, ranging from blogging services to the video-sharing site YouTube. For a while, the company's search technology even powered rival companies' search engines -- Yahoo! relied on Google searches for nearly four years until developing its own search engine technologies in 2004 [sources: Google; Hu and Olsen].

?Google's influence isn't limited to just the Web. In 2007, company executives announced their intention to enter the FCC's auction of the wireless spectrum in the 700 megahertz (MHz) band. That part of the wireless spectrum previously belonged to analog television broadcasters. Google representatives said the company entered the auction to foster competition within the wireless service industry. Google supported an open technology approach to wireless service in which consumers could use any device with any provider rather than face limited choices determined by the provider and its preferred vendors. In order to participate in the auction, Google had to prove it was ready to meet the reserve price for the spectrum: $4.6 billion. Ultimately, Google didn't win the auction. But the company still achieved its main goal -- Verizon, which won the bid, must follow the open technology approach Google wanted.

Google's name is a variation of the word "googol," which is a mathematical term for a one followed by 100 zeros. Page and Brin felt the name helped illustrate Google's monumental mission: Organizing billions of bytes of data found on the Web.

Bonus tip - in order to get the best results for your DIY woodwork project you should source and purchase your materials at least two or three weeks before you are ready to start making cuts. Stack it in a dry location with spacers between the boards, making sure to allow for plenty of air circulation so the material will dry out. You'll get less warping and splitting this way, and the wood will be much easier to work with.

Groupon will take to the airwaves with Super Bowl ad

This Sunday, Groupon will air its first ever television commercial during the Super Bowl, acting as a catalyst for the daily-deals market to up its advertising game.

Groupon’s taking the most main of all mainstream plunges: a Super Bowl ad. The daily deals site will shell out an estimated $3 million for some commercial time this Sunday and potentially, officially establish itself as the local coupon courier to rule them all.

The company has been living the start up dream. It’s collaborated with local vendors and earned their trust while also branching out internationally, all while driving its valuation up as high as $15 billion. Groupon notoriously backed away from a Google acquisition as well, aiding the company’s financial worth and growth prospects. However, the market for location-meets-coupon is only getting more crowded.

LivingSocial has had a stellar month (largely thanks to its Amazon deal), adding five million subscribers in January, putting it behind Groupon by 30 million. This brand new polyurethane watch from Nooka and designer Karim Rashid uses an unconventional display.

Nooka has enlisted the help of famed designer Karim Rashid for the creation of the company’s first circular watch design, called the Yogurt. The company created the watch with the concept of universal language and democratic design in mind. The soft and flexible polyurethane watch features a circular face that tells time using digital hexagons for the hour in the center, and small dashes representing minutes on the outer circle. Untraditional as it is, we don’t think you’d spend any extra time looking at your watch with this ‘universal’ design. The watch will come in six different ‘flavor’ colors and will have a sleep mode and 12 or 24 hour display mode. Nooka Yogurt, $130.

Home DIY Market: An Introduction to Home DIY

Home DIY is a great thing. You can get a really good feeling inside of satisfaction when you are complemented by friends and family on the work you have achieved, as well as the sense of fulfillment when you are enjoy the spoils of the work you have carried out.

There are many different ways to learn how to do DIY, but I recommend starting at the beginning and making sure you have the job planned properly.

The first thing you need to do to achieve successful DIY is to make sure you have the tools for the job. Every job will need different tools, but there are some tools that are common to most projects. You will need a good hammer, my personal choice is an Estwing claw hammer with a leather handle and with a weight of 20 ounces (I have had my hammer for nearly 30 years now), you should visit the store and hold the hammers available to be sure that they feel comfortable and that you are happy with the weight of it. The hammers available will vary a lot in price, all I can say is that a good quality hammer will last you a long time.

You will also need a good utility knife with changeable blades, the best type for you will probably be one where the blade can be retracted, this is the safest type and you are less likely to have any accidents. Will all sharp tools you should always remember that tool is safest when it is sharp. If you allow a blade to become blunt then you will be inclined to push harder to cut through the material, this will then mean you have less control over the blade and you hand, invariably what will happen is the material will slip, the knife will slip with all the pressure you are applying and there will be an accident.

I don't know the exact number, but a vast majority of accidents that go through the emergency room a year are from people who have been working at home and have some kind of accident, this only account for those who go to the hospital. I don't want to put you off as there is no reason to be put off, there is no reason to have an accident if you are careful and confident of what you are doing. If you continue to follow my articles I will show you how to avoid as many of these avoidable accidents by giving you the guidance, tools and confidence to carry out some great homemade DIY and other DIY projects.

What is Quora? A simple guide to social media’s new darling

You can't avoid it any longer: Quora has arrived and you're going to be hearing a lot about it. Here's our look at the site some say is poised to become the next Twitter or Facebook.

Quora is something of a mystery. For some reason, it’s become an Internet phenom, regarded by industry professionals as many times more legitimate than your run of the mill Q&A sites, but still unpretentious enough to seek out purely academic content and personnel. In reality, the site is just a series of questions with a community consensus on answers. So why is it suddenly the apple of Silicon Valley’s eye? We take a look at the enigmatic site, and where it’s going.

A private beta version of Quora was launched in 2009 by founders Adam D’Angelo and Charlie Cheever, both former Facebook execs. Quora is based around the idea that people don’t only want to share information about themselves (a la Facebook), but also want to share knowledge.

Last year, Quora received as much as $11 million from venture firm Benchmark capital and analysts estimate it’s current valuation is approximately $300 million. Now, it’s becoming what Ask Jeeves never had a chance of being: A legitimate, question-answer system with its ear specifically tuned to all things tech and geek related. In an interview with GigaOm, Cheever said he wants Quora to serve as a Wikipedia for all the topics that the open encyclopedia finds unimportant.

Obviously, everyone is able to create an account and use Quora – but some of those users happen to be particularly notable in the digital media industry. AOL founder Steve Case is an active user, and Mark Zuckerberg even has a profile (though he’s only asked five questions and answered none). Bloggers and writers from publications like The Wall Street Journal and Business Insider are consistently contribute to the site – even though how some of them are using it is controversial.

Business Insider writer and longtime industry expert Robert Scoble has been less than shy about his feelings for Quora. He loves it. He’s one of the most active users on the site. Scoble was recently criticized for abusing the site and turning it into his personal soap box (don’t worry, he repented).

Interestingly enough, he was called out by TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington (who, we realize, has a flair for argument), whose own site unabashedly loves Quora and makes no secret of using it as a resource. They aren’t the only ones: Many industry writers and bloggers use Quora for content generation, which, from a certain angle, seems equivalent to a day spent hovering around the tech world water cooler. It raises the question: If the people answering the questions on Quora (which include the likes of Google engineers, Facebook product managers, and App Store developers) are reputable sources, are their answers akin to interviews? There’s been incredibly interesting commentary on everything from Google’s muddled social project to technology’s unicorn, the White iPhone. When a user asked what Dustin Moskovitz thought of The Social Network, Moskovitz himself provided the answer.

But part of Quora’s appeal is that it’s an open forum, and sometimes things can be misconstrued – and motivation isn’t always clear. Companies are more than able to add anonymous intrigue to questions concerning their upcoming products, and scorned employees welcome to provide one-sided narratives.

Really, at its core, Quora is a society of tech and digital enthusiasts who want to talk about the industry and indulge their own curiosities. And its members, founders, and employees are so tremendously protective of it that you either play by Quora’s rules, or you walk yourself over to the wasteland known as Yahoo Answers.

DIY Mistakes

DIY Mistakes

Amateur mistakes are all too easy to make, and can be very time-consuming, so here is a list of the top ten most common, and how to avoid them.

Don't rely on judgement

Putting up a shelf should be a five-minute job, but saving time by not using a spirit level could cause all manner of problems later, when ornaments fall over or books slide off. Use a spirit level to establish a level edge (when the bubble sits exactly in the middle of the window), then use a pencil to draw a guideline to work by.

Use primers

Watermarks can be a pain to cover up. Painting over the stain with a water-based emulsion won't help; the stain will keep showing through, however many coats you use. Apply an oil-based primer paint or spray over the stain to seal it, and then you can cover it with any paint and colour you choose.

Think ahead

Bespoke panelling around a bath and toilet give a bathroom a clean finish, but bear in mind that, inevitably, there will be the odd leak, and you will need access to the pipes to fix them. It's easy to plan one removable panel or concealed door for this purpose, and this will give you a place to hide the spare toilet rolls and soap as well.

Avoid quick fixes

After wet weather, wooden doors become swollen and stick in the frame. Planing the wood is an instant fix, but be sure to paint over the exposed edges with an oil-based primer as well. If the wood is not sealed like this, it will continue to absorb moisture and swell up - leaving you to do the job all over again.

Don't scrimp on essentials

There's no point in buying expensive paintbrushes for one job, but steer clear of budget brushes. These have fewer bristles, which make an untidy finish, and they moult more than a mid-range brush, so you will be constantly picking bristles out of the paintwork. Synthetic brushes are fine for the DIYer, and they keep their shape, while natural bristles tend to splay out after use.

Protect surfaces

Painting a skirting board can be a painstaking job as you try to keep the paint away from the carpet. The obvious solution is to pull back the carpet edge; this is not always practical, but spending five minutes fixing masking tape along the edge of the carpet will do the trick. If you are staining a wood skirting board, remember to protect the joining wall with tape too.

Support your shelves

When putting up shelves and pictures on a partition wall, you must locate the weight-bearing studwork behind the plaster for support, or screws and nails will come out under the slightest weight. These wooden posts, which are the backbone of the wall, may not always be where you want your nail to go, but in this case, you can always use cavity fixings, which anchor screws and nails into the plaster. It takes a lot of time and effort...

Rumors of a Nokia-Microsoft alliance have us cringing at the very thought of tying Windows Phone 7 exclusively to Nokia devices. Here's why.

“Steve, you are probably thinking, ’What do we gain on the back of this?” Well, two million units shipped in the last quarter is not really much to write home about, given $500m in marketing programmes (ouch), but with Nokia on-side, you get access to a potential 20-25% global share over time – and EXCLUSIVITY. Right now, do you really think HTC, Samsung and LGE are pushing your products ahead of Google’s? You need to tie yourself to a high-volume player to be relevant, which I know goes against your DNA. But do not forget that your MS-DOS software was originally only for IBM and then claimed a near-monopoly in the market. And, Steve, if you are successful, we will all forget your quotes from 2007. Do you remember this one: ’Apple is a cute, little, tiny niche guy?’ Or this one: ’No chance Apple iPhone is going to get any significant market share?’ (Ouch x2.) More importantly, your shareholders are going to be impressed that you have not gone after an expensive acquisition strategy in what is really (let’s face it) a consumer electronics industry.”

Ahmad reasons that Nokia is spending too much on research and development (R&D) working on its own custom operating systems, and would benefit from the high-end smartphone market and U.S. access that Microsoft could help it attain. Microsoft, in return, gets eventual access to the large phone market share that Nokia currently holds around the rest of the world, and a partner that will focus on Windows Phone 7 exclusively. His reasons sound decent when written in a cheeky open letter, but they don’t hold up to reality. Neither Microsoft nor Nokia would benefit from a merging or exclusive arrangement.

Yes, Nokia and Windows Phone 7 are both in trouble. While Nokia continues to do well around the world in the low-end feature-phone market, it has next to no presence in the United States, which has moved to more flexible, snappier app-based operating systems like Apple’s iOS, and Google Android. Older smartphone OS’s like Nokia’s Symbian, RIM’s BlackBerry, and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile are being squeezed out of the market by these newer, shinier touch-based operating systems. Nokia has tried to adapt with devices like the N8, but hasn’t been able to find a U.S. wireless operator willing to subsidize its high-end phones for several years. As a result, most of its devices are only able to be ordered online, and are too expensive ($500+) to gain much traction.

Microsoft had a similar problem with Windows Mobile, but has been a lot more proactive in finding a solution. The company rewrote its mobile software from the ground up, basing much of it on the interface concepts developed on its underrated Zune brand of MP3 players. The fruit of its efforts, Windows Phone 7, hit the market on nine devices in early November to a reasonable amount of critical acceptance. The phone’s interface is a personal favorite of mine, and shows that Microsoft can develop a forward-thinking platform. Unfortunately, the OS has had a rocky start due to the mammoth popularity of Android devices and the iPhone 4. Through the holidays, Microsoft only sold about 2 million WP7 devices to retail partners — less than the software maker had hoped. With no new WP7 devices shown since launch, many have begun to fear for the OS’s future in the market. Certainly, 2011 will be an important year for Windows Phone 7 to show its strength. It should not, however, be the year Microsoft abandons the open licensing platform that made Windows successful in the first place.

So why not partner? Well, how would joining forces truly benefit Microsoft or Nokia? Yes, Nokia may save some money on R&D and Microsoft would gain an exclusive partner with some actual market share around the world, but the benefits for both companies would be short-lived. A joint Microsoft and Nokia would meant that one of the least successful platforms in the United States was partnering with one of the least successful hardware makers. While there is still a glimmer of hope that WP7 will take off over time, Nokia has shown little to no ability to adapt to the North American market. Its devices look out of place, and often antiquated, when put next to competitors that get the market like Samsung, HTC, Apple, and Motorola. Building WP7 into its hardware will not give either company more leverage in the United States or other high-end smartphone markets.

Today’s high-end markets will trickle devices to tomorrow’s low-end markets. Android and iPhone smartphones have already shown great growth in most markets around the world. Even Nokia’s iron grip on the feature phone market appears to be slipping as customers begin to move to more media-rich devices.

Microsoft’s chief competitor is Android. The device has taken the Windows model of being on any device and taken it to the Nth level, by being a completely open-source platform, free for anyone or any device manufacturer to use. Tying itself to one device manufacturer is the opposite of what Microsoft needs to do. Microsoft’s success depends on Windows Phone 7 infecting every device, not just one niche of them. If there’s anything MS should learn from its slow debut it’s that it must take a cue from Google and make its platform less expensive to license, more open, and more customizable by hardware makers.

Nokia has always been a hardware and software company. Like Apple, it has thrived on marrying its hardware to its own custom operating systems. Nokia does have a bloated R&D budget, but I’d argue that such an inflated emphasis on research and development is necessary for the Finnish company. For years, it has neglected its duty to keep ahead of industry trends. It now must catch up. The company has spent billions creating its Ovi brand and adding new features like turn-by-turn navigation to its phones. It has been working on a completely new OS named MeeGo for some time now. How does the company benefit from abandoning this platform before it ever has a chance on the market? Nokia has placed all of its eggs in MeeGo. It’s not about to move them all to a struggling platform like Windows Phone 7.

With that said, it would not hurt either company to partner on a few devices or a line of devices. Nokia could use diversification in its product line and Microsoft could stand to benefit from any hardware maker supporting Windows Phone 7 in a substantial way. Such a non-exclusive partnership would show that Nokia is willing to change and that WP7 is still interesting to some hardware makers. All of this talk about exclusive partnerships is ridiculous and would be a bad move for Nokia and Microsoft, but it never hurts to make a new friend. Both Microsoft and Nokia could use a friend right now.

In an article in The Atlantic, Nicholas Carr theorizes that while the Internet can make certain tasks easier -- he used research as his example -- it's also changing the way people think. He suggests that if we use machines to perform certain tasks, we may lose the ability to do those tasks for ourselves in an efficient way.
